Day 36: T-Rex Model

Day 36:

A sculpture of the T-Rex skeleton from the Museum of Natural History. It’s been my favorite thing about NYC ever since I was a child and it always  will be.

I used paper clay, and the base is made out of the museum’s pamphlets. If you see it in person you can see the floor plan and everything.

We were supposed to ONLY use paper for this project, but once it was over I just painted the base. You can still see the floor plan, but now the dinosaur and the base are clearly distinguishable. 

I would’ve posted this sooner but when the project was over, before painting the base, I tore off like half the paper clay from his ribs and his entire right (our left) foot. I wasn’t going to post him until he was finished, and now he is!

Anyways, I worked hard on this. I hope you guys like it!

Day 35: Central Park

Day 35:

For this project everyone in my class was assigned to represent a section of NYC and we had to work within the actual shape of the area. Then each piece was judged individually and put down so that all the pieces  came together, like a puzzle.

Photos really don’t do the way it came out justice, it really did come out pretty amazingly.

My section was Central Park. I chose to sort of go for  a summertime vibe/ecosystem type of piece. I made all the critters out of Super Sculpey, and the land mass out of foam, paper pulp, plaster and moss. The fish are actual fish that you can find in the bodies of water in the Park (they’re a giant Koi, a Large Mouthed Bass, a Yellow Perch and the turtle is one of the giant snapping turtles found in the park. 

The reason there’s a Polar Bear is because the main attraction in the Central Park Zoo is Gus the Polar Bear annd as for why there’s a Bunny with Easter Eggs: It’s because even though the rabbit population of the park has pretty much disappeared, every Easter there’s supposedly an explosion of Bunnies in the Park because of people who buy them for their kids without realizing that rabbits actually take work to care for, and then release them in the park.

Day 33: The Raven

I started this at the beginning of the Semester. Now that I've had more time to myself I finally went back to it and finished it. I'll be doing that with a lot of my projects from this semester, actually... Anyways, I probably could've noodled this a lot more, but it really was time to move on...


Also, I need to get better at photographing my paintings...

Day 32: Beary Tales

Well would you look at that, I totally managed to sort of kind of finish my Adobe Illustrator pamphlet project and somehow managed to miss the only train that could possibly get me there on time. SEEMS I'VE DONE GOOFED.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys! I've been super busy lately, and I actually do have A LOT of stuff to upload... It's just not at the point where I'm comfortable enough with it to upload it... Anyways, expect lots of more art soon.

Day 29: A terrible doodle

I like how even though I was a total creeper and stole a reference pic of this from a friend’s Facebook it still ended up looking nothing like her.

And of course, by “I like” I mean, “I hate”. I need to stop being terrible.

Oh! And I would’ve made this update yesterday, but I totally fell asleep for 16 hours. Oh well. Happy belated Halloween everyone.

Day 27: Jekyll and Hyde

Day 27:

This project was supposed to be a sort of transexual take on the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Ugh, the more I look at this project the more disappointed in it I am. I really had to rush through the process of this project. So, instead of having time to do proper revisions on the final drawing I just cleaned up a thumbnail and took it to finish over the course of two days. I really REALLY need to stop doing that. I also really need to sleep…. And to stop being a bad artist…

Day 25: Sketch Dump

Day 25:

I've been super busy.

For a class we were challenged to use a material we'd never used before to portray a famous New Yorker.  I chose fabric and Theodore Roosevelt, and I tried my best to make a Teddy Bear that looked like him!  He's huge and he's made out of german mohair, stuffed with excelsior, his hair and mustache are real fur and his paw pads are swede leather. Also, his vest is lined with silk!  This is as far as I got before it was due.

I plan on making him a suit jacket during winter break when I have more time. I'll put up a better picture of him once he's got that on.  Right now I'm trying to make as much work as possible so that I can get critiqued at CTN. I really, REALLY want to get into the Walt Disney Animation Studios summer internship for Visual development and I'd like to have some work that I can get suggestions on by the time the convention comes around.

Day 24: Swimmin' Bill

This is from the second project I’m working on in quest for portfolio development: The Lone Shark. 

It’s a story about a Great White Shark trying to bring law and order to a town of criminal fish. This is said shark! Quick-toothed Bill!

Day 23: Bear Detective Profile

Day 23:

Some more Bear and Rat: Detectives work. This particular project was also a great excuse to finally use pastels again, after not using them for years and never having used them properly.

I discovered that pastels make my clothing very sad.

Day 22: Temporal Kitty Scratching

I’ve got an idea for a series that follows along this style. I’ll probably re-do this one though, since I think it looks really sloppy, but hey.

Day 21: In Memoriam

I worked hard on this one. It was made for a project to commemorate the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire.

My only REAL regret with this is that this piece reproduces so poorly… But hey, lesson learned…

Day 20: Completely Accurate Self-Portrait

Fun fact: This is another self-portrait.

Another fact that's even more fun: It's once again a completely accurate representation of reality. Exposed muscles and all.

Isn’t the world a funny place sometimes?

In case anyone is wondering, yes, this is indeed about a mechanized Hydralisk and no, I don’t like the way it came out much either.

But it’s just one of those projects that makes me happy whenever I see it… I’ll probably regret putting it up here later at some point…

I’m still working on that last thing I posted, but today I got stranded out in the middle of nowhere and ended up drawing this and had to play with it a bit when I finally got home.

It’s a quick digital paint job, but I sort of like it… Kind of… Not really…

I need more practice.

Day 15: Value Study

I’ve been growing increasingly displeased with my digital painting skills as of late. So I decided to do a small digital painting study.

I’m just blocking in the shades right now, I’m not completely sure what I’m doing at the moment, but hopefully I’ll come out a better painter because of this…

This particular drawing has been sitting on my desk for like two weeks. I don’t even know why it took me this long to just ink and color the damn thing.
